Jura The shadow of the wolf hangs over the attacks of heifers in Petite montagne

A new attack on a herd of young cattle grazing at a place called “under the Madonna” in the town of Gigny took place twice in less than 24 hours.

For the first time on Saturday at the end of the morning, a heifer weighing nearly 200 kg was attacked and partly cut up on the spot. The young beast did not survive. The predator was seen by residents of the area before fleeing. The cattle belonged to the Gaec de l’Abbaye in Gigny, operated by Pierre-Emmanuel Champon, a few hundred meters from the place of the attack and near the hamlet of Croupet.

A second predation

This Monday morning, the owner went to check the state of his herd and noticed new predation on another cattle. The animal also had deep wounds on the chest, on the back and part of the thigh had been torn off. The animal was euthanized in the morning.

The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) noted the two attacks and drew up the reports of use in the field. If the local population evoked the wolf, the representatives of the OFB did not wish to pronounce as the proofs will not be established.

Christian Donier-Meroz, lieutenant of louveterie in Petite montagne was also on hand to find possible clues about the canine which partly devoured the heifers.

Repeated attacks on livestock near villages challenge the population and farmers.
