Jurassic World 3 tames the US box office, ahead of Maverick but behind the previous episodes of the saga

The dinosaurs of Jurassic World: the world after hit the US box office. With 143.3 million dollars collected between June 10 and 12, the third film in the trilogy and sixth installment in the franchise achieves the second best start of the year 2022, behind the 187 M$ of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness but in front of the 134 M$ of The Batman and the 126 M$ of Top Gun: Maverick (excluding Memorial Day holiday).

This is obviously a solid result for the reunion between Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and the “old” Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, but somewhat behind the two previous parts of the trilogy ($208 million for Jurassic World and $148M for Fallen Kingdom). The mixed reviews from the press and spectators could also limit the claims of the Giganotosaurus and its congeners in the weeks to come.

In the meantime, this success once again shows the potential of “legacyquels”, after the triumph of Top Gun: Maverick. With a fall in attendance still limited (-44%), Joseph Kosinski’s feature film garners 50 new million greenbacks this weekend and pushes its total to 393 million dollars, barely a few million from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film worn by Tom Cruise, which recently became the actor’s biggest success on American soil, should soon (tomorrow?) become the most lucrative production of the year across the Atlantic.

Finally, note the illustration of the polarization of American attendance around blockbusters and other tentpole moviesthat the receipts of Jurassic World: the world after and Top Gun: Maverick represent 92% of American weekend receipts.
