Jurassic World: this sexist controversy caused by the film

On the occasion of the broadcast of the blockbuster Jurassic World on Sunday May 29, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1, Télé Star reveals why this feature film caused a sexist controversy when it was released in theaters.

Released in cinemas in 2015, the blockbuster Jurassic Worldworn by Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Omar SyVincent D’Onofrio and Irfan Khanwill be rebroadcast on Sunday, May 29, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1. Directed by Colin Trevorrowthis feature film takes place 22 years after the events of the first film of the trilogy Jurassic Park, on the same island: Isla Nublar. Despite the incident that occurred during the original feature film, Jurassic World opened but, after a few years, the park struggles to retain a now jaded audience. InGen scientists then artificially conceive a larger and more ferocious dinosaur species, the Indominus Rex, which is quick to escape from its enclosure.

Jurassic World features the actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in the lead roles. Several species of dinosaurs present in the previous films reappear, in particular the Velociraptor. With a budget of 150 million dollars, this blockbuster was a huge commercial success, given that it raked in over $1.67 billion in revenue during its theatrical release. In France, more than 5.2 million spectators went to the cinema to discover this feature film. However, Jurassic World has also sparked controversy regarding its scientific accuracy, as well as its possible sexism.

Jurassic World: director Joss Whedon “shocked” by the first promotional clip of the film

Indeed, when the film was released in theaters, several critics criticized it for show sexism, especially in the treatment of the character of Claire Dearing, played on screen by Bryce Dallas Howard. Following the release of the first promotional clip for the feature film, director Joss Whedon criticized Jurassic World to be “sexist 1970s style“.”She’s stuck, he’s a force of nature. Really ? Still ?“, he wrote in particular on Twitter.

During an interview director Colin Trevorrow admitted that he was “not totally disagree” with advice from Joss Whedon. He wondered why Universal chose this particular clip, which shows “than an isolated scene in a film that has its own internal logic. Characters begin as archetypes, as stereotypes that are deconstructed as the story progresses“. The filmmaker, however, claimed that the film as a whole was not sexist, while emphasizing the importance of the character of Claire Dearing in the plot.
