So come take a peek into the future and see what the first-ever bezel-less display could look like.
A few years after introducing the notch system, for larger screens on its iPhones, Apple now has a completely different dream: to offer a screen without the slightest edge. But she’s not the only one.
Between Apple and Samsung, the race for borderless screens is on
As the formalization of the iPhone 15 approaches, many rumors are circulating on the Web. One of them seems to indicate that the new range of Apple smartphones will introduce thinner edges for its screens. We know it: the various manufacturers dream of one day being able to free themselves from the current form factor of telephones, and thus offer devices without their notch (or pill). This is also one of the technological challenges that Apple and Samsung are trying to meet internally for the next few years.
We told you about it a few weeks ago, Apple undoubtedly wants to part with the notch on its iPhones. To do this, she will have to take up a major challenge: to place Face ID technology under the screen of her smartphones. If this still poses a problem today, it is in particular because of the various components placed under the screen. They need enough light to work properly. However, this problem could soon find its solution thanks to Samsung’s advances.
Samsung presents a very first prototype of a borderless smartphone
In case you didn’t know, Samsung Display is one of the Apple brand’s display suppliers. And on the Chinese platform Weibo, the user ICE UNIVERSE, well known to X.com, shared an interesting screenshot. This gives us an overview of the different cutouts between Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and Apple’s iPhones. But more importantly, it confirms the desire of manufacturers to design 100% borderless screens in the future.
Concretely, the South Korean company presents here a brand new OLED screen without edges. Called “All around full screen”, this technology aims to combine 3D lamination with brightness control on the edges of the screen. Our colleagues from BGR tell us that Samsung Display would therefore work on a camera located under the panel.
According to information reported by analyst Ross Young, edgeless screens may not see the light of day until 2027 on iPhone models. It remains to be seen whether Apple and Samsung will overcome this technological challenge. And if so, when will they get there?
