Alexandre Astier returns to the physical appearance of Lancelot in “Kaamelott – Premier Volet”, and gives us some clues about what awaits the character.
A gloomy throne, plunged into semi-darkness. Two huge shoulder pads on either side of a pale face. A mouth concealed by a strange hood. In Kaamelott – Premier Volet (released in theaters last summer) Lancelot’s physical appearance and the environment in which he evolves are undoubtedly part of the details that have raised the most questions among viewers.
Why did you offer such a costume to the villain of Kaamelott? While costume designer Marylin Fitoussi already answered this question last August, at the microphone of the site Captain CinemaxxAlexandre Astier – on the occasion ofa digital meeting with his fans organized by Fnac – spoke in turn about this curious outfit, which gives Lancelot the look of a very specific animal:
“Lancelot was treated (…) like a spider”he confided.
“That is to say that in fact, his lair, in the castle of Kaamelott, is slightly below the main hall. (…) I wanted to see him, not coming down stairs or coming through a door, but coming out of a hole to emerge like a spider coming out of its burrow. We made the arch too low for him on purpose. Because Thomas Cousseau who plays Lancelot is tall, so he went out like that, lowering his head. It gives him a bit of a spidery attitude which I really liked.”

This analogy with the figure of the spider therefore went so far as to model the costume of Lancelot, designed by Marylin Fitoussi, as also specified by Alexandre Astier:
“For the costume, we took this reference from time to time for certain materials, certain textures. These two large shoulders that he has on the side are supposed to recall a joint, the particularity of the spiders being that they have the joints above the head. Their head is lower than the top of the legs.”
If Lancelot inherited this insectoid appearance, it’s for a very specific reason, most certainly linked to the future of his character in the rest of the trilogy. A subject on which Alexandre Astier is particularly enigmatic:
“All I can say is that Lancelot is someone who has been in a transformation for a long time. (…)“revealed the filmmaker. “In fact, this suit is nothing more than a step. It’s a step on what it will become.”
