Kaamelott: why does the light of Excalibur change at the end of the film?

Alexandre Astier came back to the reasons for the change of energy and color of the Excalibur sword in “Kaamelott – First part”. Because it is not at all a coincidence.

This is a subject that has raised a lot of questions about the spectators of Kaamelott Premier Volet, first in theaters and then on their sofa when discovering Alexandre Astier’s film: the question of Excalibur. Indeed, during the film, the blade of the famous sword changes color, even releasing electrical energy. But why ?

The answer of course came from Alexandre Astier himself, creator of Kaamelott, who during a FNAC conference explained this change experienced by the legendary sword between its recovery in the rock and its use by the “Pendragon son” against Lancelot:

I believe that when [Arthur] removes the sword for the first time (…) and it gives off the same type of light as it did during the series, we are dealing with the sword which ennobles and designates the king.

Simply, the gods take that away from him. Because what they want from him – and he will understand it later – is that he becomes the avenging arm of the gods.

“The gods give him a new mission and they turn his sword into something very aggressive because the big sinner in this movie is Lancelot,” says Alexandre Astier. “Because he broke up the kingdom of Logres at the beginning of the film and because he agreed for lack of money to pay his Saxon mercenaries not with money but with a piece of the kingdom of Logres called the Isle of Thanet. And that the gods cannot bear.”

The filmmaker, musician and author concludes, not without giving a little nod to the future Second Part: “[Les dieux] therefore find in Arthur an avenger, and they give him a weapon accordingly. What gives him a new problem is that he did not carry out the mission. He didn’t kill Lancelot. Is it going to be blamed on him, will it be in the sequel? I do not know…”

To be sure, it will be necessary to wait for the Second part to be written and officially announced, because it is still not officially announced. But there is no doubt that with its 2.6 million cinema admissions last year, producers like Alexandre Astier are ready to return to the lands of King Arthur…
