Kabirou Mbodje, boss of the Wari money transfer platform, indicted for rape in Paris

The boss of the African money transfer service Wari, Kabirou Mbodje, was indicted last week in Paris for rape – charges he disputes – AFP learned from concordant sources. This indictment for rape against four complainants was pronounced on October 13 and is accompanied by a placement under judicial supervision, we learned from a judicial source, confirming information from the Parisian.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed that it was Kabirou Mbodje, one of the founders in 2008 of Wari, a digital financial and commercial services platform widely used in money transfers and which was in the years 2010 one of the jewels of Senegalese “tech”. The man is suspected of having committed three rapes during the same evening and a fourth earlier in the year.

“My client, whose identity I cannot confirm, strongly denies the charges against him. He is perfectly serene. The investigation will shed light on the facts and the reality of this case.”reacted to AFP Philippe Zeller, the suspect’s lawyer.

The businessman and his company have been experiencing a difficult period for several years, marked by competition from new operators and legal troubles. Mr. Mbodje was notably sentenced to two years in prison, including six months in prison, by the Dakar Criminal Court for “misuse of corporate assets” after a legal tussle which pitted him against former collaborators. Today, Wari is no longer active in Senegal and its outlets have closed.
