MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Reuters) – The White House said U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris would travel to Memphis on Wednesday to attend the funeral of Tyre Nichols, an African-American man who died in hospital this month after being violently beaten by several police officers during a traffic check.
Members of the families of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, who also died following a police intervention, respectively in Louisville, Kentucky and Minneapolis, Minnesota, will also be present.
Five officers, all African-American, were charged last week with second-degree murder and fired from the force.
A shock wave was caused across the United States by the broadcast of videos showing the incident, which lasted several minutes. President Joe Biden said he was “outraged” and “distressed”.
