The American opera singer Karan Armstrong is dead. She died in Spain at the age of 79.

Sad news for opera fans: American singer Karan Armstrong (1941-2021) is dead. She died on Tuesday (September 28) at the age of 79 in a hospital in Marbella, Spain, as a friend of the opera star of the “BZ” confirmed.

The Deutsche Oper Berlin published a detailed obituary on Karan Armstrong. In it she is recognized as a “great singer actress”. For almost four decades she had a say in the Deutsche Oper Berlin and was present in more than 400 evenings and 24 different roles from 1977 to 2016.

Titled as “Diva of Modernity”

Karan Armstrong was born in 1941 in the US state of Montana. After completing her studies, she made her operatic debut in San Francisco in 1965, after which she impersonated roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In Europe it was seen for the first time in 1974 in Strasburg.

She had great success as Elsa at the Bayreuth Festival in 1979. Through her husband Götz Friedrich (1930-2000) she came to the Deutsche Oper Berlin at the end of the 1970s. At that time he was the general manager of the house. The marriage produced a son. In her late career years, Karan Armstrong was dubbed the “Diva of Modernism” because she had helped to design numerous world premieres of operas.
