Karate Kid: Will the new movie bring back Jaden Smith or Hilary Swank?

Sony is working on a new ‘The Karate Kid’ movie, but it’s unrelated to the hit Netflix series ‘Cobra Kai’. How is this supposed to work? Jaden Smith or Hilary Swank could be the answer.

  • “Cobra Kai” brought a breath of fresh air to the “Karate Kid” series.
  • Now a new “Karate Kid” film is to be released, which is related to the old films, but not to “Cobra Kai”.
  • How is this supposed to work? Sony will probably have to use the characters that didn’t appear in “Cobra Kai” yet.

The ‘Karate Kid’ franchise thrived in the 1980s, but the third film in the series fell short of expectations and film #4 was without lead actor Ralph Macchio, who was replaced by Hilary Swank.

Then 16 years passed before a new film appeared in 2010 with “The Karate Kid”. He moved the action to Beijing and actually told the story of the first film again, but with new characters, and kung fu and not karate was fought here – for whatever reason.

Although this reboot brought in a lot of money, there was never a further sequel and it was only “Cobra Kai” that managed to reignite the “Karate Kid” fever. The former YouTube production, which now runs exclusively on Netflix, sees itself as a sequel to the films, although “Karate Kid 4” and “Karate Kid” from 2010 have not yet been discussed.

Sony now wants to benefit from the increased interest in “The Karate Kid” and has announced a new film that will continue the previous series. However, the film is not related to “Cobra Kai”, so how is that supposed to work?

The new film has to fit in with the existing films but without Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. The solution to the riddle could be to simply build on the 4th film or on the reboot. With Hilary Swank you would at least have an Oscar winner on board.

However, Swank should now appear as a sensei, and she will no longer pass as a karate student. Jaden Smith from “The Karate Kid”, on the other hand, is no older than some of the “Cobra Kai” actors and would therefore be suitable for another film.

Either way, Sony’s plan seems doomed to failure. After all, the new “Karate Kid” hype is based on “Cobra Kai”, a film with no reference to the series, which instead continues one of two largely forgotten films, should only interest a few viewers.

Since “Cobra Kai” is also produced by Sony, you probably don’t want to get in the way of the series, but at the same time you want to make money with a film without having to share the income with Netflix. We will find out whether this will work by 2024 at the latest, when the new “Karate Kid” film is scheduled to start in cinemas. Meanwhile, “Cobra Kai” fans are hoping for a sixth season in which John Kreese takes his revenge.
