He was one of the most famous fashion designers in the world: Now Karl Lagerfeld's story is being filmed. Filming should begin in 2022.

Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) was one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. Little is known about the early years of the German, who was creative director at the fashion house Chanel until his death. The production company Network Movie Hamburg has now announced that it will develop "a multi-part / miniseries about the previously unknown life of the Lagerfeld family with young Karl at the center".

Based on a novel by Heike Koschyk (54), which will appear in 2022, the "hidden story of the Hamburg entrepreneurial family" will be told, "from which Karl broke away at the age of 18, went to Paris and began his great career there". Screenwriter Christian Schnalke (55) adapted the novel, which is based on previously unpublished sources. Filming is slated to begin next year.

Insight into a "previously hidden world"

"After his death, the public's interest in Karl Lagerfeld remained unbroken," explains Jutta Lieck-Klenke (69), producer and managing director of Network Movie Film- und Fernsehproduktion GmbH. "How was young Karl, why did he break off his family ties and what turning points made him one of the greatest international fashion designers?" With the film project, the production company wants to "open the door to a previously hidden world and decipher the family secret of the Lagerfelds".
