Kate Beckinsale remembers her first appearance in Cannes 30 years ago. Thanks to Keanu Reeves, there was no fashion faux pas back then.

30 years ago, Kate Beckinsale (49) almost experienced a fashion faux pas on the prestigious steps of Cannes – if it weren’t for her colleagues Keanu Reeves (58) and Robert Sean Leonard (54). At the premiere of “Much Ado About Nothing” in 1993, the two stars were their “absolute legends”. Beckinsale posted a picture of the moment on Instagramin which she narrowly escaped an embarrassing mishap.

“He folded up like a blind”

Commenting on the photo she shows between Reeves and Leonard at the 46th Cannes Film Festival, she recalls the embarrassing moment: “I had bought the bodysuit in an airport shop and when I got in the car to go with Driving Denzel and Pauletta Washington to the premiere, all the snaps in the crotch popped open and he flipped up like a shade.” At that moment she didn’t think it was appropriate to take care of it while she was sitting in the car with the others: “So I just quietly panicked.”

Beckinsale held on in front, the other two in the back

With her body open, she walked “the biggest red carpet of my life” and whispered to Keanu Reeves and Robert Sean Leonard what had happened. “In this picture I’m holding the front gusset, the two are holding the back gusset,” Beckinsale describes the absurd situation 30 years later. A gusset is an insert of fabric in the crotch. At that moment, Reeves and Leonard were “absolute legends” who probably had never heard the word “gusset” before – “but both jumped in to save me, no questions asked”.

The reason for remembering this fashion faux pas was Kate Beckinsale’s recent appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. On Monday she attended the premiere of the French drama “Pot au Feu” in an exciting pastel green dress by Zuhair Murad (51). She posted a photo of her look on Instagram and wrote: “I remember my first time on these steps 30 years ago, in scuffed steel-toed Dr. Martens shoes.”
