As she turns 40 this Sunday, January 9, Kate Middleton’s birthday will be the orphan of an extraordinary royal tradition.
This Sunday, January 9, 2022 is a very special day in the world of British royalty: the Duchess of Cambridge celebrates its 40th anniversary. But there is one royal tradition that will be sadly missed for Kate Middleton’s birthday. Normally, the bells of Westminster Abbey should ring in order to mark the birthday of a member of the Royal Family in a unique and special way. But the Covid-19 pandemic has put an end to this tradition since April 2020.
The reason ? The royal family had to revise their spending by cutting the costs of their family traditions. “The bells of the abbey can be heard ringing before services and to celebrate religious holidays. The bells have also traditionally been rung to mark the birthdays of members of the royal family”, a spokesperson for Westminster Abbey said in a statement. But this tradition has been suppressed.
Kate Middleton will blow out 40 candles in a small group
After consultation with Buckingham Palace, the bells will ring only for the Queen and Prince Charles. An absence of mark therefore, for Kate Middleton, even if the Duchess of Cambridge had planned a modest party for the celebration of her 40th birthday. “She didn’t want anything flashy anyway, it’s not really her thing. But given the current climate, everything will probably be even smaller “said a source close to the royal family who wanted to remain anonymous.
Kate Middleton’s birthday party will only include the very close friends of the couple she forms with William, in addition to members of the royal family. The move came this winter, when the family gathered at Anmer Hall for the holiday season.
