Katja Burkard has been living with a whistle in her ear for 30 years – tinnitus. What triggered it and how she deals with it.

Most of them know Katja Burkard, 55, as the tough presenter of "RTL Punkt 12". What probably only a few people know: It beeps at her, as she now admits in an interview with the "Bild" newspaper. It's not an insult to yourself, it's a fact. "After a serious traffic accident 30 years ago, I was in shock. With the stress came tinnitus," explains Burkard.

The noises in his ear are chronic, sometimes louder, sometimes quieter. The moderator has now learned to live with it. "You have to accept tinnitus. I see it as my friend and my personal seismograph for stress." If it hits too much, relaxation helps. "After a vacation with a lot of yoga and meditation, my head is very still," says Burkard happily. Her advice to all concerned: accept the whistle and don't focus on it. The RTL presenter knows that this is sometimes easier said than done.
