Kenya or Germany ?: Haseloff’s CDU ahead in election poll

Kenya or Germany?
Haseloff’s CDU ahead in election poll

A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt in six weeks. The ruling CDU can expect to continue to provide the Prime Minister. And unlike five years ago, she may also be able to choose between two coalition options.

Six weeks before the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff’s CDU remains the strongest party despite the loss of approval. The Christian Democrats come in for a poll MDR to 27 percent. That is 2.8 percentage points less than in the 2016 election. For a continuation of the Kenya coalition, thanks to the gains for the SPD and above all for the Greens, it would be enough.

According to the survey by Infratest dimap, the Greens have improved by 5.8 points to eleven percent compared to 2016. The SPD increases by 1.4 points to twelve percent. The AfD comes to 20 percent in the survey and remains the second strongest force. Compared to the 2016 election, however, it has lost 4.3 percentage points. Haseloff repeatedly ruled out a collaboration with the AfD, as did an alliance with the left.

According to the survey, the Left Party has lost 4.3 points compared to the previous election and is 12 percent. The FDP could move back into the Magdeburg state parliament for the first time in ten years. It currently has 8 percent approval. This would also make it possible for a majority for a black-red-yellow government alliance – the so-called Germany coalition.

Two thirds dissatisfied with corona policy

As the survey also shows, almost half of those surveyed, at 46 percent, are satisfied with the state government. This is roughly the same as before the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Last June, a good two-thirds of the Saxony-Anhalters were satisfied with the Kenya coalition.

Two thirds of the respondents are now dissatisfied with the government’s corona crisis management. Only 31 percent rate the work of the state politicians around Haseloff as positive. Last June, the mood was completely different. At that time, 72 percent still supported the work of the state government. Prime Minister Haseloff also lost popularity, but the 67-year-old remains the most popular state politician with 61 percent.

CDU: a sign of the desire for stability

Saxony-Anhalt’s CDU leader Sven Schulze rated the survey as a desire for “stability instead of experiments”. The survey shows “that the people in Saxony-Anhalt want only Reiner Haseloff as prime minister in the future,” he said.

The group leader of the Greens and top candidate Cornelia Lüddemann sees the approval for her party “tailwind” in the election campaign. “There is more,” she explained.

A new state parliament will be elected on June 6th in Saxony-Anhalt. Haseloff has been Prime Minister of the country since 2011. For the survey, the polling institute Infratest dimap interviewed a total of 1202 people between April 16 and 21.
