Kevin McCarthy elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, this may be a detail for you…

Snatch voting

Good kid, the atmosphere? Do not judge on appearance. On the night of January 6 to 7, in the American Congress, the Republican Party imploded on the occasion of the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. A handful of elected Trumpists managed to block, during
four days and three nights, the accession to the perch of the candidate designated by the party, the Californian Kevin McCarthy… While for a hundred years the election, which had become a formality, had always been played in the first round, it took fifteen rounds for McCarthy to achieve his ends.

Easily

The surrealism of the situation was reinforced by the American tradition which wants elected officials to happily invite women and children to attend their enthronement. Trapped, they had to hang around for four long days. We have therefore seen children running around, falling asleep in armchairs or lining up checks…Here, Milla Gooden, daughter of the chosen one
Texas Republican Lance Gooden, gratifies McCarthy with high five invented by baseball player Glenn Burke in 1977 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Reason for discord

Since we are here, let’s take a moment to look at little Milla’s outfit and this woolen dress decorated with a jacquard pattern called “Fair Isle”. Precisely invented in Fair Isle, an isolated island in the north of Scotland, in the Shetland archipelago, then popularized by Edward VIII, this pattern was originally to meet precise specifications: to combine five or six colors in total, including two for the same line, and, above all, not to present any areas of solid color. Here, none of that is respected. But let’s not overwhelm poor Milla.

Bossy pair

By his side, clinging to his father’s tie, his brother Liam stands out for his pair of
sneakers he wears, in this case Nike Air Jordan 1, the very first model to have been
marketed by the brand co-created by Michael Jordan and Nike. Launched in 1985, the Air Jordans were originally banned from NBA courts because their colors did not meet the league’s dress code. At each of his appearances on the field, the basketball player was therefore fined $ 5,000, which the brand hastened to pay, delighted with this publicity stunt.

Alarm button

Finally, it should be noted that, in the face of Lance Gooden and his offspring, Kevin McCarthy puts on a good face, striving to hide his bitterness at having been tortured by the most radical Trumpists and at having finally been forced to give in to them on many points to snatch his election. Let’s be blunt: at this point, we’d much rather McCarthy do his best to hide that pesky fancy color-contrast buttonhole lying on his jacket collar, in an attempt to pep up his look. In any case, it would be much less pointless.
