KFC: the chain launches plant-based vegan fried chicken

Fried chicken specialist KFC takes a step towards vegan or flexitarian consumers. Since Monday, January 10, and for a limited time, it is possible to order in one of its many restaurants in the United States a new product that does not contain any animal protein: Beyond Fried Chicken.

Developed by the specialist in alternatives to meat Beyond Meat, these nuggets are made from plants.

This new product, of which little is known about the recipe, is aimed at those who want to eat a little less meat but who are not vegans or vegetarians, according to Kevin Hochman, president of KFC in the United States. United. Besides, the nuggets are prepared with the same tools as the classic KFC products; those who follow a strictly vegetarian diet could therefore see it as a disadvantage.

The launch comes after a series of consumer tests over the past two years. Beyond Meat and KFC have also signed a partnership to develop products without animal proteins for a year.

KFC is the first fast-food chain to offer a vegan chicken product on American soil. The burger specialists, leading Mc Donald’s, have however already marketed several sandwiches imitating the taste of steak. Moreover, the brand will soon launch the McPlant.

These innovations aim to bring back customers who have moved away from this type of catering for health or sustainable development reasons.

France has nearly 250 KFC restaurants. No launch date for Beyond Fried Chicken has been communicated in France.
