Since March 2022, Russia has occupied the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. According to Russian investigators, a nuclear power plant employee has now been killed by a car bomb. Ukrainian military intelligence confirms the attack.
A security employee at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine has been killed by a car bomb. According to Russia’s State Investigative Committee, a hidden explosive device was detonated as the man sat in his car. The attack occurred in the city of Enerhodar, where the power plant employees live.
Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed the attack and released a video showing the explosion of a car and said that the nuclear power plant’s “head of security,” Andriy Korotky, had been killed. The secret service explained that Korotky was a “war criminal” and that he “voluntarily collaborated with the Russian occupiers.” He denounced pro-Ukrainian employees at the nuclear facility.
The man was also chairman of the city parliament in Enerhodar set up by the occupying power. The management of the nuclear power plant confirmed Korotky’s death and spoke of a “terrorist attack on behalf of Kiev.” The director of the nuclear power plant, Yuri Chernichuk, spoke of a “reckless” attack that “must be punished.”
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, has been occupied by Russian troops since March 2022. The six reactors are at a standstill, but still need to be cooled and looked after. There have been repeated explosions in and around the plant, for which both sides blame each other. Employees of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are on site and monitoring the situation.
