Killers of the Flower Moon: “Exceptional”, “phenomenal DiCaprio”… Cannes ignites for “one of the best Scorsese”

“Killers of the Flower Moon”, Martin Scorsese’s new film, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to the delight of moviegoers. What did the public think of it?

Presented in Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Killers of the Flower Moon, a new film by Martin Scorsese, is one of the major events of this 76th edition. This 3h26 western is inspired by real events and adapted from the book of the same name by David Grann, published in 2017, which looks back on the murders of the native Osage tribe.

It brings together Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, two favorite actors of Martin Scorsese, alongside Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow.

Presented this Saturday, May 20, after a more than glamorous red carpet, Killers of the Flower Moon was screened to moviegoers and film professionals, who were waiting for this film with great impatience.

The first opinions on the new Scorsese film

The entire film crew – and Martin Scorsese in the lead – were greeted to thunderous applause in the Grand Théâtre Lumière, after a late arrival, which meant that the screening started 45 minutes late.

And after 3h26 of film, the verdict fell. And the reviews are rave reviews on Killers of the Flower Moon. The Cannes public did not hesitate to share their impressions on social networks. Here is a small selection of post-screening tweets.

“Length – but how long? Every second of Martin Scorsese’s rich and epic 206-minute epic is worth it.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon: DiCaprio delivers the best performance of his life, in an often brilliant Scorsese epic that lacks the mythical aspect of the book, but succeeds as a toxic love story.”

“Martin Scorsese may have won the right to make 3:30 movies, but that doesn’t make him the right move for Killers of the Flower Moon, a gripping tale of a true crime told from the killer’s point of view.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon deserves its runtime as a look at a horrific time in America’s past. The lead actors all deliver powerful performances. I wonder if Scorsese was the right person to tell this story. He stumbles into the third act and is far from perfect, but it’s still solid.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon: a slow dance of power, betrayal and exploitation in a land plagued by envy and greed. Scorsese’s direction is masterful and beyond words: the shots worthy of paintings, the tempo, the humanity, his emotional attachment to the story… Exceptional.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime western with some of Martin Scorsese’s darkest themes to date. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone are all phenomenal. [le film] from solid to excellent. A tragic reflection on greed and power.”

“It’s not just nominations, but Oscar wins are already secured for Lily Gladstone as Best Actress and Martin Scorsese as Best Director. It’s early, yes, but nothing will top them. Gladstone is the heart of the film and delivers a legendary performance.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon…wow! A poignant and difficult story to watch given the subject matter, but one can’t help but marvel at such on-screen mastery. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone are absolutely amazing. Among the best Scorsese.”

The movie Killers of the Flower Moon hits theaters on October 18.
