North Korea provokes with a new missile test

As part of a series of weapon tests, North Korea fires a newly developed anti-aircraft missile. State media report a success. Today the UN Security Council wants to deal with Pyongyang’s armament program.

North Korea claims to have tested a “newly developed” anti-aircraft missile. The state news agency KCNA reported that the missile’s “remarkable combat properties” were checked during the test on Thursday. The floor has “new key technologies”.

President Kim Jong Un apparently did not attend this test. Instead, Pak Jong Chon oversees the test. He is a member of the powerful Politburo and Central Committee of the ruling Labor Party. “The test is of great practical importance for the development of various future anti-aircraft missile systems,” said KCNA

The test is the latest in a series of North Korean weapons tests. On Tuesday, Pyongyang reported the successful test of a hypersonic missile. If the North Korean information is correct, the internationally isolated country would have reached another stage in upgrading its arsenal. Hypersonic missiles are extremely fast and flexible, which makes their destruction by missile defense systems very difficult.

Numerous Western states had strongly condemned the alleged hypersonic missile test. The internationally largely isolated North Korea is subject to strict US and UN sanctions because of its nuclear and missile program. The UN Security Council plans to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the situation.
