Kim Kardashian slips into an iconic Marilyn Monroe gown for the 2022 Met Gala. But first she had to lose weight. Our author explains why she finds Kardashian’s handling of it particularly problematic.

Kim Kardashian, 41, is known for going to extremes in fashion and making a statement. It’s no secret that she gives everything for the perfect show. As the reality star revealed in a recent interview, she would also wear diapers if an outfit required it. It wasn’t for the 2022 Met Gala, but for that Kim had to do something else that is now stirring tempers.

Kim opted for a glamorous look that may have looked familiar to some. Her nude-colored glitter dress previously had another famous owner: Marilyn Monroe. The American sang a birthday song for John F. Kennedy in 1962 and became an icon at the latest in this outfit. For Kardashian, an opportunity to make a memorable red carpet appearance in a one-of-a-kind original. If there hadn’t been a crucial catch: in order to fit into the iconic dress, Kim had to lose weight.

Kim’s Radical Diet: A Choice Between Fame and Exemplary Behaviour

As she explains, it turned out right from the first fitting: Kim obviously has everything it takes for a Marylin appearance, but apparently also too many kilos for the dress. However, since the dress could not be altered, Kim had to do without it or take it off. The entrepreneur chooses the latter. She told Vogue on the red carpet: “I tried it on and it didn’t fit me. I said, ‘Give me three weeks.’ I had to lose about seven kilograms for today.” Said and done. The mother of four starved herself to her personal goal with a crash diet and a complete avoidance of sugar and carbohydrates.

Do women really have to starve themselves into a dress?

You can congratulate her for the discipline, but her handling of the radical diet is problematic, after all, she reported it to reporters on the red carpet, actually advertising for losing weight. If Kim had kept her strict diet a secret, it would have remained her private affair – many brides, for example, lose a few kilos for their big day. But the reality star – a role model for millions of women – emphasized several times in front of the cameras at the Met Gala what a “privilege” it was to be able to squeeze into the historical dress and lose weight for it. So you can ask yourself: Starving for fashion – does that still have to be the case in 2022 and also celebrated as a success?

How one of the most influential women becomes a bad role model

A woman with Kim Kardashian influence can change an entire mindset. It cannot be ruled out that Kim’s words have inspired some to do something similar and starve for a dress or an event. This is certainly not exemplary behavior.

Actress Lili Reinhart, 25, sees it that way. She rates Kim’s behavior in her Instagram story as “So wrong. So shit on 100 levels”. The “Riverdale” star, who doesn’t name Kardashian by name, writes that it’s “disgusting” for celebrities to admit they’re “starving themselves down” considering how many people idolize them. Her conclusion also on Twitter: That’s a toxic body image.

Starve for ten minutes of glamour

Kim’s hunger is doubly and trebly perfidious when you consider that she was only allowed to wear Marylin Monroe’s dress on the red carpet. She was allowed to shine in it for ten minutes, after which it had to be exchanged for a replica. Seven kilos for ten minutes of Marilyn Monroe aura – only Kim Kardashian can judge whether it was worth it.
