Kim Kardashian: Social media star boycotted Facebook and Instagram

Many stars will boycott Facebook and Instagram for 24 hours. Kim Kardashian explains what's behind the campaign.

Kim Kardashian, 39, and many other stars have announced that they will freeze their Facebook and Instagram accounts to protest the spread of "hatred, propaganda and misinformation". "Misinformation spread on social media has serious repercussions," explained Kardashian on Twitter. With this, the entrepreneur supports the #StopHateforProfit campaign, which was organized by civil rights activists. The celebrities will suspend their accounts for 24 hours on Wednesday.

"I cannot watch and remain silent as these platforms continue to allow the spread of hatred, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to divide America," said Kardashian, who currently has around 188 million Instagram followers. This misinformation would "have a serious impact on our elections and undermine our democracy," she added.

More stars take part

Other celebrities who have agreed to take part in the boycott include actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Cohen and Jennifer Lawrence, and singer Katy Perry. "I can't stand idly by when these platforms turn a blind eye to groups and posts that spread hateful misinformation," Perry wrote on Instagram. The organizers of the #StopHateforProfit campaign launched in June accuse Facebook and Instagram of not doing enough to stop hate speech and misinformation.
