This news will have hit King Carl Gustaf hard: Three of his four sisters decided not to attend his jubilee party in September. Princess Birgitta personally confirmed the sad news.

2023 is a big year for the Swedish royal family: Queen Silvia turns 80, it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa became King of Sweden and King Carl Gustaf, 77, is celebrating his 50th jubilee. This makes him the longest-serving Swedish monarch of all time.

King Carl Gustaf has to do without his sisters on his big day

A milestone that deserves a proper celebration. The King and Queen are currently in the middle of their tour of Sweden’s 21 provinces, after a short summer break they will leave for Dalarna on August 17th. The big day, however, is September 15th. On this date it is exactly 50 years since King Carl Gustaf ascended the throne. An occasion that is celebrated with a big anniversary banquet in the royal palace, to which numerous family members and many international guests are invited.

However, not all members of the royal family will be at the castle that day to celebrate King Carl Gustaf. Princess Birgitta, 86, the king’s second eldest sister, announced this on August 15 to the Swedish newspaper “Svensk Damtidning”. “Both my sisters said no, so I thought it wouldn’t be fun to go there alone. Unfortunately, because I would have liked to go, but I said no,” explains Birgitta in an interview with the publication, emphasizing that she is all had a strong desire to meet again, but since their sisters are unable to do so, this will not happen. “Of course it’s sad. We’re all used to being together,” said Princess Birgitta, visibly disappointed.

Surprising withdrawal after an emotional commitment

However, the 86-year-old does not reveal which two sisters she is talking about – after all, she has three: Princess Margaretha, 88, Princess Désirée, 85, and Princess Christina, 80. However, it is suspected that Christina, who is unlike her Sisters regularly shows with the royal couple, will also attend the Jubilee celebrations.

Surprising news, after all, Princess Birgitta emphasized in an interview with the Swedish newspaper “Hänt” at the end of June, especially for the celebrations of her brother’s 50th anniversary of the throne wanting to travel from Mallorca to Sweden. “I’ll definitely be there,” she said, making it clear that she was “very proud” of Carl Gustaf.
