King Carl Gustaf: The best pictures from the 50th anniversary of the throne

On September 15, 2023, King Carl Gustaf will celebrate his 50th anniversary on the throne. He ascended to the Swedish throne in 1973 at the age of just 27 – and has ruled the Scandinavian country longer than any monarch before him. The celebrations surrounding this special occasion extend over several days.

King Carl Gustaf: His 50th anniversary on the throne will be celebrated over several days

On Wednesday, September 13th, several receptions will take place at the castle in Stockholm. Many well-wishers come to shake Carl Gustaf’s hand and present gifts. From teddy bears to balloons, a tie and a tapestry measuring eight square meters, everything is included! And also the Danneborg, the ship of the Danish royal family, has already docked in the port of Stockholm. Queen Margrethe, among others, will stay there during her visit to Sweden.

On the eve of the anniversary, Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia invite everyone to a private meeting at Drottningholm Palace. The royal family begins September 15th itself with a thanksgiving service. A carriage ride through the state capital and an open-air concert at the foot of the castle are also planned. The culmination is a large banquet with an international guest list.

Not only King Carl Gustaf can celebrate on September 15th

The Swedish royal family has two reasons to celebrate on September 15, 2023: King Carl Gustaf is not the only one who can celebrate a 50th anniversary on this day. This day is also very special for his son-in-law, Prince Daniel – he is celebrating his 50th birthday! When Carl Gustaf ascended to the Swedish throne in 1973 at the age of 27, his current son-in-law Daniel was born. Hip, hip, hurray and alla de bästa!
