LONDON (Reuters) – King Charles attended the annual Easter Mass at Windsor on Sunday, his first appearance at a public royal event since announcing his cancer diagnosis in February.

Charles, 75, waved as he arrived by car with Queen Camilla at St George’s Chapel, where his late mother Queen Elizabeth is buried.

Charles has postponed all his public engagements since Buckingham Palace announced he was to undergo treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, detected during tests following surgery to correct an enlarged prostate in January.

If the king went to church on Sunday, this is not the case for his son, Prince William, and his family. William’s wife, Kate, said earlier this month that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy after cancer was detected following abdominal surgery in January.

Charles has carried out the bulk of his non-public state duties, such as welcoming foreign representatives and holding regular meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Last week, the king did not attend the annual Holy Thursday mass, but he released an audio message in which he expressed sadness at not being present and wished the people a happy Easter.
