King Charles will leave Sandringham for Scotland just after Christmas, rather than staying until February like his late mother Queen Elizabeth.

It would be a break with a decades-old tradition: King Charles, 74, is reported to be leaving Sandringham in Norfolk, England, shortly after the holidays and traveling on to Scotland. His mother Queen Elizabeth, † 96, however, used to stay in Sandringham after Christmas until February.

King Charles departs shortly after Christmas

The royal family traditionally spends Christmas together at Sandringham. This year King Charles invites to the festival for the first time. But as the “Daily Mail” reports, the monarch himself – in contrast to his deceased mother – will only be there for a short time. The 74-year-old is due to travel on to Birkhall in Scotland right at the start of the new year and stay north of the border for several weeks. It is said that he wants to spend as much of the festive season as possible in his Scottish homeland.

Queen Elizabeth liked to stay longer at Sandringham

Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand, always stayed a few weeks after Christmas in Sandringham on the estate in the English county of Norfolk – also to commemorate the anniversary of the death of her beloved father King George VI, † 56. The one-time monarch died at Sandringham House on February 6, 1952.

Christmas party with many royal guests

Even if it will be the first Christmas without the Queen, who died in September, many royal guests are expected to celebrate in Sandringham. In addition to Prince William, 40, and Duchess Catherine, 40, with their three children Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, Prince Edward, 58, and Countess Sophie, 57, and Mike Tindall, 44 , and Zara Tindall, 41, celebrate with King Charles and Queen Camilla, 75. The disgraced Prince Andrew, 62, will not only come with his daughters Princess Beatrice, 34, and Princess Eugenie, 32, but will also be accompanied by his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, 63, for the first time in 30 years. Only Prince Harry, 38, and Duchess Meghan, 41, are allowed to stay in California with their two children Archie, 3, and Lili, 1, after the recent release of their documentary series on Netflix.
