The year 2022 marked the end of an era for King Charles and the rest of the British royal family, but also a great new beginning. The celebrations for New Year’s Eve and New Year – for the first time without Queen Elizabeth – will look different than usual.

An eventful and turbulent year 2022 for the British Royals is coming to an end. The sad death of Queen Elizabeth, † 96, in September saw some major changes in the royal family. On Christmas Day, King Charles, 74, was heard for the first time giving his “King’s Speech” in his new role. But not only Christmas will be different for him and his family for the first time, they will also spend New Year’s Eve and New Year’s differently without the Queen.

King Charles continues the Queen’s tradition

She happily ended the year by attending the New Year’s Eve service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, which the family also attended on Christmas Day. In recent years, however, this tradition has fallen through due to the restrictions imposed by Corona and the deteriorating health of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, † 99. However, it is likely that Charles will now resume this tradition and show himself to the people waiting at Sandringham for the last time this year.

The next day is usually the New Year’s service at Sandringham. An event that the Queen has also had to do without in recent years due to her health and the ongoing pandemic. However, her son may well want to ring in the New Year with a public visit to his local church, accompanied by friends and family who couldn’t make it to the royals’ beloved home for Christmas. This includes, for example, Princess Anne, 72, who stayed at home because of a cold.

A turbulent year is coming to an end for the royal family

It is unlikely that Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, will be seen there again, because they usually celebrate the New Year with the Middletons in Buckinghamshire. Queen Elizabeth reportedly stayed up until midnight on New Year’s Eve while she was alive – and her staff at Sandringham with her. “Nobody thought it right to go to bed before the Queen,” said her former private secretary, Sir William Hesletine.

While Charles holds onto many of his late mother’s traditions, the new year will feel different without her. The family is certainly looking back on 2022 with nostalgia, but hopefully they can also look forward to a new year with new traditions – and fewer nasty surprises.
