Strict royal protocol applies within the palace walls. But there’s one rule King Charles doesn’t have to abide by – for one simple reason.

With the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, †96, King Charles, 74, not only took over the crown from her, but also inherited the royal residences such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – and with them the strict protocol that prevailed there. But there’s one rule Charles doesn’t have to worry about. And there’s a simple reason for that.

The rule in the palace is: Cell phones off!

According to Hello magazine, all palace employees should have their cell phones turned off unless they are performing a desk job that requires the use of a cell phone. However, King Charles does not have to worry about compliance with this rule: according to reports, he does not even have a telephone. King Charles gave a key indication of his aversion to smartphones when his security officer warned citizens to put their phones down before greeting the monarch.

The royal palace protocol is said to have been even stricter a few years ago. Former chef at the royal patisserie, Fiona Burton, revealed 22 years ago, according to The Mirror, that cell phones were completely banned at the time. “The protocols were pretty strict,” Burton blurted out. “Every time we went we had to go through security checks. At the time, cell phones were just coming out, so we weren’t allowed to have phones or cameras in the palace.”
