Guest of the king

The king has been a big fan of Romania for many years and is said to own at least ten houses and country estates there, reports the Daily Mail. Vacationers can rent his property in the Zalan Valley. He acquired the 17 hectare crown estate in the middle of nature in 2008. Three houses with seven rooms can accommodate 13 guests.

The website states: “The guest rooms are furnished exclusively with antique Transylvanian furniture, including most of the textiles. In order to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, there is no television or radio. Instead, you will find plenty on the shelves interesting books. Each room has a kettle and tea.” The property includes a piece of forest, wide flower meadows and small streams. Bears can also sometimes be observed.

There is more hustle and bustle in the nearby village of Viscri, where, according to “ntv”, Charles bought a Saxon farm in 2006 and thus contributed to a tourism boom. He is patron of the London Mihai Eminescu Foundation, which works to preserve the unique settlement structure. Viscri, which is also called Deutsch-Weisskirch, is famous for its historic fortified church and the old village center with its Saxon courtyards.

Both have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. The place is now considered a mecca for yoga classes and retreats. His farm on the village street is a popular photo motif for tourists. The many visitors who come thanks to Charles’ help are described by local residents as a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, they boost the economy, but they also drive up real estate prices.

Close connection to Romania

The monarch has family ties to Transylvania and is believed to be a descendant of Vlad the Impaler – also known as Prince Vlad Dracula. His name is said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s (1847-1912) 1897 novel. The monarch’s maternal great-great-great-grandmother, Claudine Countess Rhédey von Kis-Rhéde (1812-1841), also came from the region.

During his visit last year, the self-confessed nature fan said: “There is a feeling of ancient continuity here. A positive cycle in which people and nature are in balance.” Romania is “in his blood”. He also founded the Prince of Wales Foundation Romania to support the development of agriculture, traditional skills and the preservation of historic buildings.

His last visit was at the end of May 2022. At that time he visited a Ukrainian refugee center in Bucharest and started a reforestation project.
