First, King Charles, 75, and Queen Camilla, 76, made their Christmas greetings public on the evening of December 9th, a short time later Prince William, 41, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, 41, followed suit with their offspring. For royal fans, it is a day of celebration at the end of the year when the adornment of the monarchy allows a glimpse of their carefully selected portraits for Advent correspondence. This time, the inclusion of the Waleses is likely to cause astonishment.

King Charles and Co.: The royals rely on different productions

William and Kate have chosen a photo in black and white that brings back a touch of the 1990s: the family presents itself in a studio situation, everyone is smiling and has coordinated their rather sporty look. Father, mother and the three offspring Prince Louis, 5, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince George, 10, wear dark jeans and white shirts. A picture that could find a place on the wall in almost every middle-class living room in the country. Down-to-earthness and family solidarity – these are the signals that the portrait sends unmistakably. With the Waleses, the monarchy is given a more people-oriented face.

Catherine, William and George take the standing places in the background. Charlotte, as the middle child in the family structure, is given a central place, sitting on a chair in the foreground, while the youngest child, Louis, is placed in front of dad, his protective hand on his shoulder.

“The Prince and Princess of Wales are delighted to release a new family photo. The photo featured on this year’s Christmas card from Their Royal Highnesses was taken earlier this year by photographer Josh Shinner and features the Prince and Princess with her three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in Windsor,” the comment reads.

Cohesion is key

Charles and Camilla, on the other hand, appear appropriate in the photo to greet them. Her decision was based on a photo from her coronation day, taken at Buckingham Palace on May 6, 2023. It shows the monarch and his wife in the throne room of the palace after the ceremony that took place in Westminster Abbey. Cohesion is also demonstrated here. Photographer Hugo Burnand captured the couple wearing crowns and wearing coronation robes, almost leaning against each other.

The cards are now being sent out – and as different as they are: Royal fans who may be honored with one of them this year due to special merits should guard them like treasure. It’s easy to imagine that Charles and Co. will have a framed place of honor on one or two living room walls across the country for decades to come.
