King Frederik was proclaimed the new regent of Denmark by Mette Frederiksen on January 14, 2024. Before the two appeared on the castle balcony, the monarch revealed a special secret to the politician – and thereby broke an important rule.

“Your Majesty Queen Margrethe II has abdicated. Long live His Majesty King Frederik the Tenth!” With these words, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 46, proclaimed King Frederik 55 on Sunday, January 14, 2024. A historic moment in which the monarch was moved. Then Frederik took the floor and in his speech, among other things, revealed his slogan as king, which can be understood as the motto for this historic office. However, Mette Frederiksen was not surprised by the royal motto: Frederik had already revealed it to her before – meaning the King of Denmark violated a golden rule.

Prime Minister raves about Proclamation Day

The change of throne was carried out in the presence of Queen Margrethe, 83, King Frederik and Prince Christian, 18, at the meeting of the State Council at Christianborg Castle, with the ceremonial part taking place on the balcony afterwards. Denmark’s Prime Minister – who played an important role on this historic day – will probably never forget all the impressions she collected, she emphasized to the Danish radio station “DR” after the ceremony: “It was very, very nice.”

Mette Frederiksen about King Frederik: “He whispered it to me”

In an interview with “TV2”, the politician also revealed that she already knew about Frederik’s slogan “Connected, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark”. This represents a breach of royal protocol; the new ruler’s motto is actually a well-kept secret. “Not many people knew about this motto and I shouldn’t know it either. But the king whispered it to me recently when we had a dress rehearsal,” said Frederiksen.
