While climate change is already installed in our daily lives, the subject is taken head on by Scott Z. Burns, the screenwriter of Contagion – who predicted with frightening acuity the scenario of a global pandemic.
Here he cultivates his profile as a whistleblower with this anthological series. As its title suggests, Extrapolations extrapolates on what awaits humanity in the years to come.
Without spoiling you, we can already tell you that his predictions are not optimistic. This drama series presents us with a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have become an integral part of our daily lives.
The weather reports are reduced to announcing abnormally high temperatures with an indicator of the degree of toxicity of the air because of the incessant forest fires which make the air unbreathable.

In eight episodes, packed with stars, we follow characters who are faced with intimate choices with perhaps irreparable consequences. This series is here to remind us in the starkest possible way that it’s now or never to turn things around. And it’s probably already too late.
Beginning in 2037, each episode of Extrapolations moves forward in time to follow different protagonists in stories dedicated to a different component of the environmental crisis: rising temperatures, mass extinctions or sea level rise.
Kit Harington is an ersatz Elon Musk whose conscience is locked in his business, Tahar Rahim is an Algerian diplomat fighting to save the Earth, Meryl Streep lends her voice to one of the last whale specimens and Marion Cotillard plays a character both mischievous and acerbic.
The anxiety-provoking atmosphere is omnipresent and can put off those who arrive on the series for the argument of its casting. But it will certainly speak to people who already care about environmental issues.
