Along with chocolate, vegetables are a long-running favorite on our shopping list. But instead of constantly buying new spring onions and carrots, we now simply let the leftovers grow again (well, not with the chocolate). Regrow is the name of the latest kitchen trend. Here you get the information how it works.

Simply growing lettuce, spring onions and celery on the windowsill? And that from waste too? Goes! Regrow or regrowing is the new green kitchen trend and it is so good that we are explaining it for you to imitate.

What does regrow mean?

Regrow means grow back. In our kitchens, the trend is about growing new plants from vegetable scraps. Instead of throwing stems, roots and the like in the organic waste, you can grow new plants from them with a little patience and the right conditions.

Which vegetables have regrowth potential?

Certain types of vegetables grow back particularly quickly and easily. Salad, for example, forms new leaves in a glass of water. Root vegetables such as carrots, on the other hand, only develop fresh green. But even that can be wonderfully processed in delicious salads or used in a healthy, green smoothie. But not only lettuce and carrots, these healthy guys are also suitable for regrowing:

  • Celeriac
  • Cabbage
  • Bok Choi
  • Beets
  • Flower beds
  • Romaine lettuce
  • leek
  • spring onions
  • radish
  • Avocado seeds
  • Garlic sprouts
  • Parsnips
  • different herbs

How’s regrow going?

With most regrow plants, the process is very easy: simply place the lettuce stalk (e.g. Romana) in a glass of water or a special regrow container (e.g. the regrow kit from Brabantia) for a few days and then wait to see what happens. The water should be changed regularly so that nothing rots or tips over. And whoosh, new leaves will sprout after a few days and the stalk can move from its waterbed to a pot of earth. We recommend potting soil and a bright location so that our little plants have it very cozy and thrive. The best thing is that there is a place for our Regrow project even on the smallest window sill. A project that children also love to take care of.

Why regrowing makes sense

The advantages of regrowing are actually obvious:

  • It saves money
  • It saves resources
  • It’s sustainable
  • Recycling at its best
  • It’s fun, even kids

In any case, we were totally won over by the kitchen trend. You also? Then create a little space on the ribbon window and: Let it regrow!
