Klopp: “It’s great news”
Liverpool FC grabs a world champion

After a disappointing season and missing out on the Champions League, Liverpool FC begins planning for the new season. Right in the middle: the new sports director Jörg Schmadtke. And with Alexis Mac Allister, he makes a prominent newcomer clear.

Liverpool FC make their first big deal of the summer clear: the Reds sign Argentinian soccer world champion Alexis Mac Allister from Premier League competitor Brighton & Hove Albion. This was announced by coach Jürgen Klopp’s club. The 24-year-old had previously successfully completed the medical check-up in Liverpool. Mac Allister is the first signing under new Liverpool sporting director Jörg Schmadtke.

The club initially gave no information on the transfer fee and the duration of the contract. According to the British media, the fifth-placed player in the past season is said to have paid the equivalent of around 40 million euros for the Argentine. Mac Allister has signed a five-year contract at Anfield. “That’s great news,” Klopp was quoted as saying on the club’s website. “He’s someone who can play in many positions in midfield and is an all-rounder, I would say. He’s calm and composed and has real intelligence.”

Mac Allister previously spent three and a half years with Brighton & Hove Albion, during which the midfielder made 112 appearances for the Seagulls and scored 20 goals. Brighton had previously loaned him out twice for half a year to his youth club Argentinos Juniors and to Boca Juniors. Last winter, Alexis Mac Allister was part of the Argentina national team that won the World Cup in Qatar. In the final against France he was in the starting XI and provided an assist. He has made 16 appearances for his country’s national team, scoring one goal.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s a dream come true, it’s great to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” Mac Allister said of his transfer. The midfielder had a very strong season with the surprise team Brighton – and finished sixth, just one place behind the Reds.
