Knew how! – Soldering iron allows downloading expensive Tesla extras

If you want to use certain equipment extras in Tesla vehicles, you have to download the function for a fee. Or use a soldering iron.

Security researchers have hacked Tesla’s infotainment system. The so-called “jailbreak” makes it possible, for example, to activate extras or subscriptions that are actually subject to a surcharge without paying. According to a report by “Heise”, the attack took place via a vulnerability in the security controller in the AMD processor, which has been used in all models of the brand since 2021. A soldering iron, hardware worth 100 to 200 euros and physical access are required for the manipulation on the mainboard of the infotainment system. The attack is therefore of no interest to car thieves, but vehicle owners could bypass the manufacturer’s software locks and adapt the infotainment system to their own needs. The security researchers at the TU Berlin have activated the seat heating on the rear seat bench, which was not activated at the factory, as an example. In principle, the “Full Self Driving” autopilot function could also be used, but this has not yet been demonstrated. Another application could be repairs or the replacement of the infotainment unit, for which Tesla itself requires around 1000 euros.
