SYDNEY (Reuters) – A man was shot dead by police on Saturday in a shopping center near Sydney, Australia, after a knife attack that left six people dead and several injured, according to a latest report from the authorities.

A female police officer shot and killed the attacker after the attack at the busy Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center, police said.

Five of the six victims killed were women, while eight people, including a nine-month-old baby, were taken to hospital after suffering stab wounds, New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen said Webb, during a press conference.

According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, there is currently no indication of the attacker’s motivations.

“This is a horrific act of violence, indiscriminately targeting innocent people who were out shopping on an ordinary Saturday,” he told a news conference.

“Tonight the first thoughts of all Australians are with the victims of these terrible acts,” he added.

Australia’s laws are among the strictest in the world when it comes to guns and knives, and attacks like Saturday’s are rare.
