The tour app komoot is very popular with outdoor fans, whether for hiking, cycling or walking. Have you planned the next komoot route and are you using your phone for navigation? Then, depending on the length of the tour, you will definitely notice that the battery drains much faster than usual. This is partly due to the permanently switched on display and the energy-hungry GPS connection.

With a few simple tricks, however, power consumption can be noticeably reduced. In the following, we will give you a few tips that you can use to easily manage longer tours without the battery dying.

  1. turn off the display

  2. Use offline maps

  3. Airplane mode and alternate

  4. Just relax

  5. Hear music more efficiently

  6. Prevention is better than aftercare

turn off the display

If you have subscribed to komoot Premium or bought a map pack, you can also use turn-by-turn voice navigation. You will receive turn-by-turn instructions and the like via voice announcement and you can leave the display switched off.

Android users also have the option of using the “Wake screen” function while navigating. The mobile phone screen switches on automatically when there are navigation instructions.

The feature does not exist on the iPhone, but you can save energy by using komoot with an Apple Watch. The iPhone display can remain switched off – you will receive navigation instructions directly on your wrist.

Don’t you want to turn off your phone screen while you’re on tour? Then at least turn down the screen brightness. This also saves energy.

Use offline maps

In addition, you can save your battery if you download the required map material in advance. With komoot Premium or the purchase of map packages, you have the option of using offline maps – this is not possible with the free version of komoot.

If you are planning your tour, you can download it. To do this, switch to your profile within the app, open your planned tour and activate the option “Available offline”. This means that the mobile phone does not have to access the mobile network and download data while on the go.

Airplane mode and alternate

When you turn on Airplane mode on your phone, your phone cuts cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections. This also saves you energy, because your cell phone is not constantly looking for an Internet connection and downloading e-mails or app data in the background.

Please note, however, that activating flight mode will remove some komoot functions. Auto reschedule, reschedule a tour, edit a tour, and live tracking are not available in Airplane mode.

Alternatively, you can also manually limit the data consumption. To do this, deactivate the WLAN and restrict the data synchronization of apps and e-mails in the background. You can find the corresponding options in the settings of your mobile phone.

Just relax

Telephoning or WhatsApp also suck on the cell phone battery. It is therefore advisable to avoid it. Instead, just switch off and enjoy your tour.

Hear music more efficiently

If you’re touring alone, you probably won’t want to do without music. However, music streaming sometimes consumes a lot of energy. However, if you don’t want to miss out on your favorite songs while you’re on the go, there’s potential for savings here too.

Do you have a subscription to a music service? Then use the offline mode and download your favorite songs, albums or playlists in advance. Since the free versions of the music streaming services usually do not support this, another option would be to transfer audio files from the computer, save them locally on the smartphone and play them using the pre-installed audio player.

Another option is to use a separate music player, such as an MP3 player like the Sony Walkman. If you have a smartwatch, depending on the model, you can also use it to play music – regardless of your cell phone. This also saves valuable energy reserves.

Prevention is better than aftercare

Before the tour you should of course fully charge your mobile phone. So check your battery level in good time before you start. If it is foreseeable that despite all the tips you will not get there with one battery charge, then you should create additional capacities. The easiest way to do this is with a power bank, which you can use to charge your smartphone on the go.
