Konami: a new game announced at TGS, but above all rumors

It must be said that with Konami today, rumors are often more exciting than announcements. Thus, according to the sources of the VGC site, the surprise announcement of the TGS is unlikely to concern one of these three fetish series whose fans have been waiting for news for many years. By choosing the TGS and involving the actor Yûki Kaji, Konami seems to be preparing an announcement that is primarily aimed at the Japanese market. As a reminder, the publisher’s biggest recent success is a mainstream game released only in Japan on Switch and which has won the stars with more than 3.5 million copies sold. According to VGC, and we would be tempted to agree, announcements concerning Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Castlevania would be more likely to be set aside for events with a strong international reach such as a State of Play, a Nintendo Direct or the December Game Awards.

So what do we do while we wait? We summarize the rumors that have accumulated over the past year, of course.

Take Metal Gear Solid. It’s hard to imagine producing a sequel without Hideo Kojima, but there’s obviously plenty to do when it comes to remasters and remakes, especially since most of the original games have disappeared from online stores. Producing a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake at Virtuos seems up in the air for a while, but some assure that we will especially be entitled to a collection of remasters of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3 on all platforms.

On the side of silent Hill, the rumors are multiple and potentially contradictory. VGC seems convinced that Bloober Team (whose partnership with Konami is official) is working on a remake of Silent Hill 2 with a possible console exclusive for the PS5. Still in partnership with Sony, Konami would have asked other unidentified studios to develop on a new opus, images of which leaked on the internet last May and were even the subject of a DMCA complaint by Konami.

To blur the tracks a little more, sources from the Gematsu site affirmed that a Silent Hill game is in preparation at Kojima Productions, with here again the name of Sony which returns. Officially, Kojima Productions is working on two projects. One of these titles is in partnership with Xbox, the other is sometimes felt to be a sequel to Death Stranding rather than Silent Hill. Even more surprisingly, Annapurna Interactive would also partner with Konami as part of this major relaunch of Silent Hill to produce “short stories” based on the saga.

Finally, the turn of the question is more quickly done concerning Castlevania given the lack of credible rumors regarding the nature of what is in development. According to VGC, a kind of reboot would be piloted internally for quite some time by Konami Japan with the support of other local studios. Remember that the saga, which has especially shone on Netflix in recent years, remains on the release of Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls on Apple Arcade. The last unreleased episode released on home platforms dates back to 2014 with MercurySteam’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.
