(Reuters) – Korian shareholders on Wednesday approved its transformation into a European company, amid criticism in France of the methods of operators of retirement homes.

This new legal framework will allow Korian to simplify its activities in several EU countries, “in coherence” with the economic reality of the group, declared Jean-Pierre Duprieu, chairman of the board of directors, during the general meeting. of the group.

The retirement home sector in France has been in the crosshairs of the authorities since the publication in January of the investigative book “Les Fossoyeurs”, by Victor Castanet, which denounces the management and treatment of residents in certain establishments of Orpea, a competitor of Korian.

The director general of Korian, Sophie Boissard, pleaded on Wednesday in favor of a clear framework of exercise with regard to the standards and the public endowments given to the managers of nursing homes in France.

Le Parisien reported in early June that 30 complaints had been filed by families of residents against Korian.

Korian then indicated that the group was unaware of the content of the complaints and could not make any comment as it stands.

Korian’s management also reaffirmed on Wednesday its intention to submit to shareholders next year a plan to become a “mission-based company”, a French legal framework that requires companies to align their social and environmental objectives with their business model. economic.
