Kranjska Gora giant slalom – Shiffrin equals Vonn’s record – Gut-Behrami on the podium – Sport

    The pedestal

  • 1. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) 1:52.53 minutes
  • 2. Federica Brignone (ITA) +0.77 seconds
  • 3. Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI) +0.97 seconds

Mikaela Shiffrin was unusually far behind – only in 6th place – in the 1st giant slalom in Kranjska Gora on Saturday. Then on Sunday the usual picture again: The American was allowed to celebrate at the finish and greeted from the top of the podium. She set the best time in both the 1st and 2nd run and won the giant slalom with a margin of 0.77 seconds.

With her 82nd World Cup victory, the 27-year-old equaled the record of compatriot Lindsey Vonn. Shiffrin is only 4 wins away from the record winner for men, Ingemar Stenmark. That this record will fall is probably only a matter of time. The American won 6 of the last 7 races, in three different disciplines.

Gut-Behrami convincing

With Federica Brignone (ITA) and Lara Gut-Behrami, there were two other drivers on the podium who had missed it the day before. For the Ticino it is the 3rd podium this winter, after a win at the season opener in Killington and a 2nd place at the end of December in Semmering.

Valerie Grenier, who had ensured the first Canadian giant slalom victory in almost 50 years the day before, was once again able to flirt with a podium finish. After a mixed 2nd run she had to settle for 6th place.

Ellenberger’s progression run

As 29th, Andrea Ellenberger had just made it into the second run. There she showed a strong performance and gave thanks the fourth-best runtime 17 places good. The 29-year-old only just missed her best career result, since she has two 11th places so far. In Kranjska Gora, a story from the previous year repeated itself for Ellenberger: She also improved significantly in the second round, moving from 30th to 13th place.

The other Swiss women

While Wendy Holdener (+7 places) and Camille Rast (+5) were also able to make up positions in the second race, Simone Wild (-10) and Michelle Gisin (-8) went the other way. After dropping out in the 1st giant slalom in Kranjska Gora on Saturday, the 2nd race in Slovenia ended with a disappointment for Gisin. Wild was also unable to use her good starting position after 17th place in the 1st round.
