“Krone” column" – “If Salzburg shows this level permanently…”

Herbert Prohaska is impressed: The way in which Austria’s football champions Red Bull Salzburg started the 2022/23 Champions League season against AC Milan earns all respect from Austria’s footballer of the century in his current column…

Milan and Chelsea were rightly considered the big favorites in this group because of their names. But at least Salzburg has shown that there is no big class difference to the Italians. On the contrary, Salzburg were even the better, more dangerous team and once again showed a great performance in the premier class. It’s only one game, of course, but you can say that if Salzburg consistently show this level, then they can be expected to advance to the round of 16 again. We’ll at least have to wait and see how Salzburg present themselves away from home. Last season they were significantly weaker abroad than at home. Especially since Dinamo Zagreb, the supposedly easiest group opponents, also won against Chelsea. So anyone who thinks that Salzburg only need to pick up three points against the Croatians is wrong. I admired how Salzburg managed to cope with their absences. First Wöber injured himself while warming up, then Solet is also injured, there is a completely new defense and yet they hardly gave Milan any chances. The Italians gave me the impression right from the start that they took the game too lightly and underestimated Salzburg. They certainly won’t make that mistake in the second leg.
