“Krone” community series – Schwarzacher seniors live temporarily in the hotel

A lot is happening in Schwarzach, the smallest municipality in Pongau in terms of area. The largest employer in the district dominates the townscape, and there is no shortage of housing here. The residents of Schwarzach’s retirement home head to the hotel during construction work for their new center.

What do actress Verena Altenberger, state councilor Christian Stöckl or ski jumping Olympic champion Stefan Kraft have in common? They all saw the light of day in Schwarzach im Pongau. Very few of those born in Schwarzach stayed in Schwarzach. With the Kardinal-Schwarzenberg-Klinikum, the municipality has the largest hospital outside of the city of Salzburg. Around 1500 people work there. This makes the hospital the largest employer in the entire Pongau. Andreas Haitzer (SPÖ) has been the mayor of the market town since 2008. Perhaps the biggest projects of his tenure are pending. The former savings bank building and the old municipal office were recently demolished, and a new residential and commercial building is now being built in the center of town. In addition, the crossing directly in front of the site is to be defused and converted into a roundabout. Intermediate solution: Hotel instead of a retirement home Another construction site is a little off the central market square. In the former Hotel Post there is now temporary accommodation for seniors. Much of their dorm had to be rebuilt, and the inn was conveniently vacant at the time. “The new building in the settlement is our biggest project,” says Haitzer. A considerable investment of 15 million euros, originally only 11 million were planned. “I could arrange a vacant apartment for interested people relatively quickly,” says Haitzer. Of course, not everyone is right for every apartment. But there would be enough space.
