If a family business is based at 1 Schaumwalzenstraße, then it is clear what sweet delicacies are made here: The “Schaumrolle King” Guschlbauer is based in the municipality of St. Willibald in the Innviertel. The company is one of the most important employers in the region and one of the largest confectionery producers in Austria. The traditional confectionery was founded 40 years ago by Waltraud and Karl Guschlbauer and now produces much more than just foam rolls: Linzer sticks, croissants and slices, coconut domes and buns, punch cubes – the range leaves hardly any sweet wishes unfulfilled. From the garage to the international MarketsAs is so often the case, the Guschlbauer success story begins small: “I trained as a baker and confectioner and worked in my father’s two-man business,” remembers Karl Guschlbauer, “but I was always more a confectioner than a baker and wanted to start my own business .” So he started to travel through the country in an old VW bus, was present at Kirtagen, at that time still with merchandise. Waltraud and Karl Guschlbauer got married in 1984 – then it really started: “We took over my grandmother’s coffee house, in 1987 with started building a house and started producing confectionery in the garage in 1988.” In 1997 the company moved to its current location. Initially, the range was limited to a handful of popular products, such as foam rolls or coconut balls. In 1997 a pastry shop opened at the company headquarters. From the year 2000 onwards, the regional production company gradually became a national and today also an international player. The breakthrough came with the cooperation with a leading trading company: soon the company was present all over Austria with its own self-service zones. Today, Guschlbauer is 98 percent represented in the Austrian trade, as well as in 16 other countries: “Great Britain is one of our strong export markets.” Austrian top quality is in demand. Today, consumers like to go for smaller sizes, and confectionery is also enjoyed as “finger food” between meals. Another clear trend is the desire for the highest product quality. “We process around 140 tons of butter every year,” says Guschlbauer, giving an example. What drives him personally? “I’m happy when ideas work and are accepted in the market,” says Karl Guschlbauer. He’s not running out of ideas – other products are already in the pipeline. The constant improvement of production processes is also high on the agenda, after all, the finest confectionery is produced here around the clock. “And exclusively traditional Austrian products,” emphasizes Karl Guschlbauer. The coffee house is open daily, including weekends, and offers breakfast and a factory outlet. Model company for Austria Guschlbauer, the former “foam roller king”, has become a highly modern production company in the food industry and a model company in our country.
