“Krone” team on site – Styrian aid convoy arrived at the border

It’s done! 25 Ukrainian women and children finally reached the Hungarian border on Thursday night after an hour-long odyssey. There they were eagerly awaited by Alena Amschl. Born in Slovakia and living in Eggersdorf in Styria, she organized an aid transport and is now taking the refugees to Austria.

The scenes that took place in the Hungarian border town of Záhony during the night from Wednesday to Thursday were highly emotional. After hours of waiting, changes in plan due to closed border crossings and delays due to the flow of refugees out of Ukraine, Alena Amschl was finally able to hug helper Evgenij. “I just had to help.” The man had brought the refugee convoy consisting of several cars from Kyiv to safety . A total of 15 children and ten women were in the vehicles. “I have many friends in the Ukraine, so I just had to help,” explains Amschl. Born in Slovakia, she has been living in the Styrian community of Eggersdorf near Graz for years. From there she had organized a large-scale aid convoy. Packed with medicines, clothing and food, it went to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. There, under police protection, the relief supplies were loaded onto trucks, which set off for the war zone on Thursday. But Amschl and her comrades-in-arms did not return empty-handed in the direction of Styria. “We take the children and women with us – I have already organized quarters for them in Styria. It’s wonderful how everyone pulls together and helps here.”
