Klitschko: “Won’t get on our knees”

Russian troops have been standing in front of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv for weeks. Mayor Klitschko assures that the metropolis is prepared for an attack. “The Russians will never invade Kyiv,” he promises.

“We will die at worst, but we will never surrender.” In a video address to the Council of Europe, the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, used emphatic words to emphasize the Ukrainian capital’s will to persevere. “As mayor of Kyiv, I promise you one thing: the Russians will never invade Kyiv,” said the former world boxing champion before the Congress of European Municipalities and Regions in Strasbourg.

“We have fortified every building, every street, every corner of the city. We will fight to defend our city and our future,” Klitschko continued. “We will not get on our knees.” Klitschko called on the European states to support his country “economically, politically and militarily” in the fight against the Russian invasion. “We need weapons, we are fighting one of the most powerful armies on the planet,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, the Russian army continued shelling the Ukrainian capital. At least one person was killed in a drone attack on a research institute in the northwest of the metropolis. Journalists from the AFP news agency saw rescue workers recover the body. The secret service spoke of three fatalities.

A representative of the Ukrainian secret service emphasized that the building attacked was a civilian facility, “not a military one”. A Russian drone attacked and dropped a bomb. Two more drones appeared later and were shot down.
