At the dawn of the First World War, in a village in Picardy, four inseparable friends form the band of Lulus: Lucas, Luigi, Lucien and Ludwig. These orphans are always ready to join forces to face Octave’s rival band or to escape the surveillance of Abbé Turpin…
When the Valencourt Abbey orphanage is urgently evacuated, the Lulus are missing. Forgotten behind the enemy front line, they are now on their own in the midst of the conflict. They decide to join Switzerland, the “country never at war”, at all costs, but are soon joined by Luce, a young girl separated from her parents.
A family film adapted from a series of successful comics
After Children’s Games and his remake of The War of the Buttons, director Yann Samuell returns to illustrate another youthful conflict. This time, it’s the adorable band of Lulus who find themselves in the heart of the fight. And if the childish brawls of The War of the Buttons had war only in name, it is indeed in the center of real battles that the Lulus find themselves projected.
Once forgotten the small fights with the band of Octave and other games, it is the real chaos which threatens to engulf them. Fortunately, they can always count on their innocent malice…
Since 2013, Régis Hautière and the cartoonist Hardoc have been bringing the little band of Lulus to life and imagining their adventures, tinged with humor despite the darkness of their setting. Building on its success, the comic book series is now hitting the big screen. And the least we can say is that Yann Samuell has managed to retain the spirit and tone of the original works, from the good-natured comic springs to the accomplished reflections on the innocence of men.

During their adventures, the five friends meet many characters, representing the different facets of the very abstract “adult world”: rigid or benevolent teachers, pacifist soldiers, parental figures essential to orphans…
