In order to stimulate the creativity of the team and actors, Damien Chazelle organized screenings of films that inspired him every Friday evening on set, including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Singing in the Rain, The Dancer Above And Boogie Nights. To capture the spirit of these films, Chazelle wanted the film’s musical numbers to be filmed.from head to toe“, and in a single take, like the films of the 1930s with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. He also wants to imitate the look of CinemaScope format films from the 1950s, as Beautiful view of New York. He thus used Panavision equipment in wide format, the original CinemaScope format no longer being available.
