LA World Cup Day 5: International – Third World Cup gold for Warholm – Bitter deja vu for Ingebrigtsen – Sport

  • Karsten Warholm (NOR) superiorly secures his 3rd World Championship gold over 400 m hurdles.
  • Like a year ago in Eugene, Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) suffered a sensitive defeat over 1500 m.
  • In the absence of two big names, Marileidy Paulino (DOM) wins her first World Championships individual gold.

400 m hurdles men: Warholm strikes back

Karsten Warholm can call himself world champion over 400 m hurdles for the third time after 2017 and 2019. The Norwegian world record holder beat Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands (47.34) in 46.89 seconds and made the loss of the previous year forgotten. At that time, Warholm had really come down on the home stretch and had to settle for 7th place. Bronze went to the American Rai Benjamin (47.56), Eugene’s vice world champion.

Defending champion Alison dos Santos missed the medals in fifth. At the end of the curve, the Brazilian touched a hurdle and consequently fell out of the decision.

1500 m men: Ingebrigtsen sensationally beaten

Jakob Ingebrigtsen experienced a bitter kind of déjà vu over 1500 m. Like a year ago, the Norwegian gold favorite had to settle for silver in Eugene. At that time, the exceptional 22-year-old runner was surprisingly beaten by Jake Wightman. The British defending champion was injured in Budapest. And yet it was again a Brit who stood in front of the sun Ingebrigtsen.

Josh Kerr, third at the Olympics in Tokyo, overtook the European champion and Olympic champion on the home straight and was crowned world champion in 3:29.38 minutes. Ingebrigtsen (3:29.65), who took the lead early on and set the pace, still has to wait for his first world title over 1500 m. Bronze went to Ingebrigtsen’s compatriot Narve Gilje Nordas (3:29.68) in a gripping finale.

400 m women: Paulino takes advantage of the moment

The new world champion over 400 m is called Marileidy Paulino. The Dominican made the difference in the last corner and took a comfortable lead into the home stretch. In 48.76 seconds she prevailed in front of the Pole Natalia Kaczmarek (49.57) and Sada Williams (49.60) from Barbados. Paulino had finished second in the Olympics in Tokyo and also won silver at the World Championships in Eugene a year ago.

With Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, two prominent names were missing over the track loop. Miller-Uibo, the defending champion from the Bahamas, was already stuck in the lead after her baby break. The American Mc-Laughlin-Levrone had to sit out injured for the title fights. The world record holder over 400 m hurdles ran the 400 m flat for the first time as a professional in Paris in June. A month later she had set a world best for the year at the US Championships with 48.74.
