How the pricing table works

Among Google’s new smartphones, the Pixel 7 Pro is the most generously endowed with photography. It is equipped with a main 50 megapixel sensor associated with a wide-angle, a second 12 Mpx sensor with an ultra wide-angle and, finally, a 48 Mpx sensor supplemented by a telephoto lens. It is the latter that interests us here, as it is associated with notable promises of quality.

The Pixel 7 Pro, a complete cameraphone

On a technical level, the 48 Mpx sensor is accompanied by an optic equivalent to 120 mm (in eq. 24 x 36 mm), offering a magnification effect x5 compared to the wide-angle (25 mm). This optic is of course less bright than that of the main module, with its aperture at f / 3.5 (f / 1.9 for the wide-angle). To this x5 optical zoom is added a digital zoom supposed to ensure a smooth transition from x1 to x5, but also a Super Res Zoom (Ultra resolution zoom in the language of Molière) supposed to guarantee “superb” photos up to x30, i.e. approximately 750 mm (in 24×36 eq.).

The iPhone 14 Pro Max in ambush

Google is not alone in promising great results with its longest focal length. Apple, its direct competitor, does the same with its iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. He then bets for a sensor without pixel binding 12 Mpx with stabilized optics equivalent to 77 mm (f / 2.8). To ensure a x2 zoom, the latest iPhones take advantage of their main 48 Mpx sensor, of which they only retain 12 Mpx. The optics, wide-angle, opens at f / 1.78. To oppose these giants of mobile photography, we therefore multiplied the photos at different levels of magnification.

In laboratory

As always, we subjected the two smartphones to our lab scene, with constant lighting simulating day and night, using the optical magnification of the two smartphones. So understand that facing the 120mm of the Pixel 7 Pro, we have placed the longest 77mm focal length of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

By day

Google Pixel 7 Pro

By day, we obviously see that the two shots suffer from imperfections and that the Apple model has the merit of maintaining an equivalent level of detail everywhere in the image – the optics that accompany its sensor are undoubtedly there. for many. Neither of the two smartphones is capable of delivering images equivalent to those produced by their wide-angle module, but here we are dealing with really usable zooms. The Pixel 7 Pro, compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, shows more precision in the rendering of the outlines of small elements and concedes a little less noise. The image is a little less bright, probably due to its aperture at f/3.5, but the exposure is more homogeneous: see in particular the photo sensor at the top left.

By night

Google Pixel 7 Pro

At night, the exercise is, to say the least, difficult for the two terminals. Our scene, captured on a tripod to avoid camera shake, shows greater disparities. The Pixel 7 Pro benefits from much more marked software processing, and proves capable of restoring – painfully, of course – a good part of the details of the image. The characters on the cover of the book are thus readable, we can distinguish the features of the character on the ticket and the weft of the fabric samples, a task on which the iPhone 14 Pro Max stumbles. We note here that the smartphone, whose automatic settings we have not modified, has not triggered the Night Vision mode, which further increases image processing. This is also what explains the lower exposure on the shot of the Pixel 7 Pro than on that of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Finally, Google’s smartphone tends to show some artifacts all over the image.

In the field

To give you a more comprehensive look at the results you can expect from both smartphones, we took them outside and took a series of tripod shots with similar framing. Below are those of the Pixel 7 Pro, from ultra wide-angle (x0.5, 12mm) to its highest digital zoom (30x, around 750mm). Note that the smartphone offers a fairly practical framing aid using a preview of the entire image on the screen.

Here are the shots from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, going from ultra wide-angle (0.5x, 13 mm) to the longest digital zoom (15x, around 350 mm). It does not offer as advanced a framing aid as the Pixel, in fact making distant focus more hazardous.

There is x30 zoom… and x30 zoom

Google’s communication boasts of x30 shots capable of quality appearing equivalent to that of wide-angle photos. Because it seems obvious to us that a digital zoom cannot produce a quality equivalent to that of a real optical zoom, it seemed relevant to us to carry out a quick comparison with a more traditional camera.

We took the photo with a Sony Alpha 7R IV (A7R IV) equipped with the FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM zoom at its longest focal length. Then we cropped in the image to achieve the same 750mm equivalent focal length on the Pixel 7 Pro. The smartphone performs the same maneuver internally, except that here we could count on a 24×36 sensor of 61 Mpx.

Sony A7R IV eq. 750mm

Google Pixel 7 Pro eq. 750mm

The verdict is final, showing incomparable sharpness in the image captured using the camera/telephoto pair. The borders surrounding the characters displayed at the top of the crane, for example, are not visible on the smartphone image. But if you look at the preview on a small screen, you’ll quickly find that the difference is no longer so obvious: the digital zoom will have the merit of being usable enough for most sharing on social networks, for example. A great performance from this Pixel 7 Pro.

It will be recalled that the smartphone is a zoom within reach in all circumstances, weighing 212 g (665 g for an Alpha 7R IV without optics), at a price lower than most competing smartphones. At an equivalent price, few mobiles offer an optical zoom beyond x2 or x3, some simply do not offer it. You have to move towards higher prices to find smartphones equipped with telephoto lenses and, for some, record digital zooms (such as the Space Zoom x100 of the latest South Korean models), which do not manage to do so well in terms of quality.
