The Pixel 8a, made official a week before Google I/O, embodies the American giant’s offering in terms of mid-range smartphones. The device is based on a technical sheet that we summarized when it was announced, and which notably includes a Tensor G3 chip already proven in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, but also an increased storage space (128 or 256 GB), a dual photo module, a 4492 mAh battery and a 6.1-inch Oled screen. Before giving you our entire lab test and the complete rating of the device, here is what to remember about the Pixel 8a in terms of display.
From a technical point of view, the Pixel 8a seems to innovate little, at least compared to the Pixel 7a. It still relies on Oled technology, offers the same definition of 1080 x 2400 pixels and the same diagonal of 6.1 inches, for a resolution maintained at 430 ppi. However, an important element allows the smartphone to stand out from its predecessor: it no longer caps at 90 Hz but offers a variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz. There is no question of LTPO, and this rate oscillates only between 60 and 120 Hz.
Increased brightness
It is in the brightness department that Google, which promised nothing for the Pixel 7a, is reviewing its copy, announcing up to 1400 cd/m² in high brightness, and 2000 cd/m² in HDR. And in fact, if the Pixel 7a had not exceeded 774 cd/m² under our probes, its successor did much better: we measured a maximum of 1507 cd/m² in standard mode. An excellent performance for its price category, which also ranks it above a Galaxy A55 from Samsung, one of its direct competitors. Enough to compensate for reflectance in the wake of its competitors, since we measured it at 46.36% (0.5% less than the Pixel 7a). Let us add that we did not measure greater brightness when we subjected the smartphone to our usual HDR test pattern.
At its lowest, note that this screen is capable of going down to 1.9 cd/m2, within the average for its category.
Calibration always under control
This very appreciable maximum brightness is nothing without a calibration as convincing as that of the Pixel 7a which, last year, showed itself to be very mastered. Its successor is not unworthy since, with the “Adaptive Colors” mode, we noted a color temperature of 6770 K, quite close to the reference standard (6500 K), as well as a delta E of 2.8. If we saw below, it is located below 3, a threshold below which drifts are not perceptible to the eye; red, which constitutes one of the elements of this delta E, reaches 3.7.

However, as with the Pixel 7a, it is thanks to the “Natural Colors” mode that we get the best out of this panel. The smartphone is then satisfied with a delta E of 1.2 reflecting very homogeneous colors, and a color temperature remaining more or less (6795 K).

Overall, therefore, Google is offering a much more satisfactory screen this year than the one adopted a year earlier, thanks to significantly increased brightness, which increases the comfort of using its smartphone. With zero ghosting time, almost infinite contrast and low touch delay (53 ms), this screen ranks among the most convincing in the mid-range landscape.
